A very simple display of some of my pics
My original intention was to use the "Photo Station" (PS) software supplied with the Synology. But after a day of fiddling with it I have given up on this idea.
I have a lot of pictures - probably in excess of 15,000 and PS just falls over when it sees this many files. So I made a subset of about 500 files and it was OK with that. But it's a huge pain to use. Even though I'm logged on to the NAS as an administrator, PS requires me to log on again, because the files "are not in a public folder". I can't figure out how to set the permissions so that I can remove this message. For the same reason, I can't use the pictures on a web site hosted on the NAS- no permission. I tried giving the HTTP user read only permission but failed. PS frequently ( like every 5 minutes or so ) locks up with a "Cannot find data" message. When this happens I have to re-start the program.
So PS has voted itself out of the race by being totally useless.
So I'm going to show some pictures using a free product called Highslide JS. . I first discovered it about 10 years ago, and used it on many websites with no problems. Let's see how it gets on with DSM 6.2
Well - it works a treat, as you can see. This is just the basic "show a picture" mode, but I'm certain the more complicated things like Albums will work fine, as they use the same jQuery techniques as used on this page.
There are hundreds of slide shows available for download. It would be a big job to check 'em all out, but if you are going to use one, you need to. DSM has so many "gotchas" with the web functionality that there is no guarantee that a particular plug-in will work. [ The inability to do URL re-writes will most likely kill applications using MVC architecture for example]. So - Find a slideshow that works and stay with it.
